Mt Alvernia win first Western Champs title

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica -Mt Alvernia High School won their first ever County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Girls Western Championships title after scoring 327 points to dethrone many time winners St Elizabeth Technical at GC Foster College on Saturday.

STETHS however retained the boys’ title scoring 435 points with William Knibb Memorial finishing second, followed by Munro College, Herbert Morrison Technical and Cornwall College rounding out the top five.

Mt Alvernia, based in Montego Bay, had been a fixture in the top five for years but finally made the breakthrough, beating STETHS by 55 points as the former champions amassed 272 points followed by William Knibb -156, Lacovia High -114 and Sydney Pagon -107.

St Elizabeth Technical

Team captain Malia Housen led the way for Mt Alvernia, winning the long jump and high jump in Class 2, as well as the triple jump open, while Giana Murray won the Class 2 girls sprint double.

The Andrew Henry-coached team also won four of the six relays that were contested in the one-day event.
