Trehan, Walker crowned champions of All-Jamaica Squash
This year’s 46th All- Jamaica Senior Squash Championship featured Jonathan Walker and Tajhia Lumley in the men’s final, with both players seeking their first senior title.
In the women’s division, Mehar Trehan, who won the junior title earlier in the week, defeated Kerry-Gay Wright to secure her first senior championship.
Lumley served first but lost the opening point, and Walker took control of the first game to win 11–4.
The second game included extended rallies, with both players creating scoring chances, but Walker maintained his advantage to win 11–8.
In the third game, Walker moved closer to the title as he remained composed under pressure. Lumley took a three-minute injury break while trailing 4–3 after appearing to hurt his leg. When play resumed, Walker won a sequence of points to lead 6–3 and closed out the game 11–6 to complete a straight-sets victory.
Walker said limiting errors was key to his win.
Walker said he was satisfied with his preparation for the championship.
“I mean it’s a great feeling to be back here and finally getting my first All-Jamaica win. Last year was my first year back to squash after like a two-and-a-half-year break and I was a bit out of practice. I folded under the pressure and I went away from that year very disappointed in myself and how I played in the semi-final. Instead of throwing in the towel and giving up, I gave myself a year to improve. I really focused on taking it this year because I really wanted it. I knew what I did well last year and what I needed to build on, and I’m just really happy to see the hard work pay off this year,” Walker said.
Trehan won all her matches in both the junior and senior competitions in straight sets. In the final, Wright lost 1–11, 3–11 and 4–11. Trehan scored nine consecutive points at the start of the first game before Wright scored.
“It feels honestly amazing and I fully thank my coaches, my parents and the association for getting me to this moment. It’s an accumulation of every match I’ve won and lost, just keeping my calm and trusting my instincts and everything I’ve learned. I thank God that it was able to happen for me this year,” Trehan said.
Other winners in the senior categories were Men’s B: Ethan Miller, who also won the junior title; Women’s B: Priya Stoddart; Men’s C: Jevon Muirhead; and Women’s C: Rihanna Stoddart.
Rihanna Stoddart received the David Bicknell Award for female performance, while Jaden Emery received the Tony Burrowes Award for sportsmanship.
Jamaica Squash President Karen Anderson said the performances reflected continued progress among the players.
“We’re growing again, and I think that’s important. It shows that the players are working really hard to improve their games and are doing what it takes to represent their country,” Anderson said.
She said the organisation is preparing for several local and overseas events later this year, including the senior Caribbean championship, which was scheduled to be held locally last year but was moved to Guyana due to the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
