Two men nabbed in connection with goat theft in St Mary

ST MARY, Jamaica — Two men were arrested after police intercepted a vehicle linked to the theft of goats in communities across western St Mary on Thursday.

The dramatic arrest of the men was captured on a video that has gone viral, showing a Probox motor car at the side of an embankment on a section of the roadway.

The car appeared to be a licensed route public passenger vehicle (PPV), according to a licence plate attached to the vehicle.

A release from the St Mary police on Friday said the arrests came about 1:05 pm yesterday, following what investigators described as a “swift response” to reports of goat theft in the Cox Piece and Woodpark areas.

A team of officers responded and proceeded to the Dressikie community, where a motor vehicle matching the description provided was intercepted.

Police said the driver attempted to evade them near the Mille Gully intersection but lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and collide with an embankment.

Both occupants were subsequently taken into custody at the scene.

Further investigations led to the recovery of two goats in the Free Hill area. The animals were secured, and police said the owners have been contacted and are assisting with the investigation.

The St Mary police, in the meantime, say it remains committed to “safeguarding agricultural assets” and supporting farmers through proactive policing in rural communities “through proactive policing and swift response to criminal activities”.
