Even better after Hurricane Melissa

Eleven Restaurant and Lounge cares for community then rebuilds

SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — While some businesses shuttered their doors for good, despite a battering from Hurricane Melissa last October, Eleven Restaurant and Lounge made the decision to go full speed ahead.

“Our staff were the driving force behind our decision to reopen as quickly as possible,” Glenton Rowe, co-owner of Eleven, shared with the Jamaica Observer.

The storm left a trail of devastation, destroying the restaurant and deeply impacting the lives of several staff members whose homes were also damaged. Eleven Restaurant and Lounge, the gem of Savanna-la-Mar, was reduced to rubble in a matter of hours.

“Seeing years of hard work torn down was truly devastating,” Rowe said. “We had to remake most of our seats, our televisions, cameras and other equipment were destroyed and had to be replaced. It was a lot!”

The emotional toll was immense, but even in the face of such loss, the team refused to be defeated. Almost immediately after assessing the damage, a decision was made to rebuild, not just for the business, but for the people behind it.

Before turning their attention to rebuilding the physical structure, Eleven’s focus was on giving back during the recovery period. Through a partnership with World Central Kitchen, the team helped provide hot meals to families affected by the storm. The gratitude shown by those they fed reinforced the restaurant’s purpose beyond being just a commercial enterprise. It grew into a pillar of community care, and that same mission fuelled its revival.

This sense of responsibility to restore livelihoods and give their team members a chance to get back on their feet combined with a deep-rooted belief in faith and purpose; it transformed what could have been seen as a setback into an opportunity for renewal.

The rebuilding process, however, was not without challenges. Due to widespread damage across the parish, sourcing materials and securing skilled workers proved difficult due to high demand. Despite these obstacles, the team pressed on, determined to create something even better than before.

What emerged was a completely reimagined space, more elegant, refined, and visually striking. Though renovations had always been part of its plans, the storm unexpectedly provided a blank canvas to bring a bigger vision to life.

Today, guests are welcomed into an upgraded Eleven experience. The ambiance is enhanced, the menu elevated, and the overall vibe more inviting than ever. Customer feedback played a key role in shaping these improvements, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Even staff members have expressed renewed excitement, describing the new space as more beautiful and inspiring to work in. There are now four dining areas to choose from. The privacy corner, the elevated outdoor, the patio by the falls and the cosy indoor setting.

“I like working here because I have a great team; each one helps one, and I have a great boss,” Tanece Smith, one of the servers at Eleven, told the Observer.

“You should come here because we have an awesome ambience, great food, and great vibes,” she added with a welcoming smile.

The journey has been a powerful lesson in perseverance. The team at Eleven has come to understand that success is not defined by ease, but by endurance. With faith as their foundation and community as their support system, they have overcome tremendous adversity. The encouragement and loyalty from patrons have been instrumental, serving as a constant reminder of why they continue to push forward.

“As [Eleven Restaurant & Lounge] approaches our third anniversary, the focus remains on growth, improvement, and strengthening the foundation we have rebuilt,” Rowe said. “Our main priority right now is to continue delivering exceptional experiences to every guest who walks through our doors.”

Open daily from 11 in the morning to 11 at night, Eleven Restaurant & Lounge is now a vibrant hub for modern Caribbean cuisine, infused with international flavours and a signature twist. More than just a dining space, it has become a cherished venue for celebrations, birthdays, anniversaries, and life’s special moments, a five-star dining experience in the heart of Savanna-la-Mar.

“The race is not for the swift, but for those who can endure,” Rowe stated.

“To our loyal customers, we extend heartfelt gratitude, because it is through your unwavering support that Eleven continues to rise, stronger than ever,” added Rowe.
