Barnaby brushes aside rivals in Legal Light Romp
In a commanding performance, five-year-old American-bred bay horse Barnaby swept all before him to win the $1.4-million Legal Light Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park on Sunday.
Trained by Anthony “Baba” Nunes and ridden by two-time champion jockey Raddesh Roman,
Barnaby easily took the Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) by 7¼ lengths. He stopped the clock in 1:54.2. Splits were 25.3, 49.3, 1:14.1, and 1:40.2.
Barnaby was content to settle off the pace early, watching as stablemate Neo Star (Tajay Suckoo) led the field around the clubhouse turn and onto the main track. Barnaby continued to bide his time as Neo Star showed the way to Teflon Don (Abigail Able) and main danger Girvano (Robert Halledeen) down the backstretch.
Roman made his move approaching the half-mile turn. Barnaby quickly circled runners and had the field covered turning for home, full of running. Once balanced in the lane, he drew off with authority to win untouched.
Girvano stayed on for second, with Neo Star holding third.
Jockey Tevin Foster was the top rider with two winners on the 10-race card. Foster’s winners were Lucky In The Sky for trainer Byron Davis in the third race and Sudden Flight for owner/trainer Raymond Townsend in the fifth race.
No trainer had more than one winner.
Racing continues on Saturday.
