Mayor Norman Scott alleged assault case referred to mediation
KINGSTON, Jamaica—The assault case involving Mayor of Spanish Town Norman Scott, has been referred to mediation when the matter was called up in the Balaclava Criminal Court on Monday.
Scott and the complainant are scheduled to return to court on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
Attorney-at-law Charles “Advoket” Ganga-Singh is representing Scott, while King’s Counsel Tom Tavares-Finson appears on behalf of the complainant.
The charges stem from a confrontation on September 3, 2025, at a polling station in the constituency of St Elizabeth South East.
According to reports, the incident occurred when Scott allegedly exceeded his five-minute allotted time at the station. Police report that when an election agent asked him to leave, a commotion developed, during which Scott allegedly struck Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supervisor Julie Francis in the face and damaged her glasses.

Scott has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property.
His attorney, Ganga-Singh, had previously argued that the mayor was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a mob of JLP supporters and had to be rescued by security personnel.
The defence has also questioned why no charges were laid against any other parties, despite Scott filing his own police report.
“There is not much that can be said about the matter, as it has gone to mediation, but I am confident that all parties will work out something that suits everyone,” Ganga-Singh said.
