‘We’re not satisfied with just being here’
Arnett Gardens set sights on JWPL final
ARNETT Gardens FC arrive at the Jamaica Women’s Premier League semi-final stage with a point to prove and, according to Head Coach Garnett Lawrence, a mindset that goes well beyond simply being grateful for the occasion.
Saturday’s first leg against the Manchester-based Los Perfectos marks only the latest chapter in what Lawrence believes is a story of genuine, structural growth for the women’s programme.
“Reaching the semi-final stage is a major milestone for [the] Arnett Gardens women’s team; it’s the kind of achievement that signals real growth, not just a good season,” said Lawrence. “In women’s football, where structure, consistency, and support systems are still developing across many clubs, getting this far shows that Arnett’s female team is building something solid. It means the players are not only talented, but disciplined, organised, and capable of competing under pressure.”
Arnett Gardens enjoyed a positive regular season, topping Zone A on 28 points, and warmed up for the postseason with a thumping 6-0 win over Proven Girls in their last group fixture. The “Junglists” are also at the top of the pile in the attacking and defensive stats, entering the semi-finals with the second most goals scored (38) and second least in terms of goals conceded (5).
Los Perfectos, meanwhile, are no strangers to this stage, having featured in last season’s semi-finals, and Lawrence is well aware of the test that awaits. However, he insists his side is coming to compete, not simply to participate.
“Facing Los Perfectos at this stage won’t be easy, and we’re not approaching it like it is. They’re organised, disciplined, and they’ve earned their place, just like we have,” he said. “But Arnett Gardens women’s team didn’t come this far to play cautious, we’re coming to compete. The mindset in the camp is clear: We’re not satisfied just being here.”
The collective hunger, Lawrence emphasised, has been the defining glue of Arnett’s entire season. Moving away from relying on individual brilliance, the team has functioned as a unit, and he expects nothing less in the semi-final.
“One of the biggest strengths throughout this run has been the collective effort. Our key players across every area of the pitch have played a crucial role not just in moments on the ball but in leadership, communication, and maintaining the team’s structure,” he noted. “This is not a game where one individual carries the load. It will require everyone to be locked in, focused, and executing their roles at a high level.”
Arnett Gardens and Los Perfectos will meet at 3:00 pm on Saturday at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence in the curtain raiser of a double-header that also sees defending champions Frazsiers Whip tackling Real Mona at 6:00 pm. The teams will meet again next week at the same venue for the return leg.
