Underdogs Real Mona looking to rewrite the record books
History-makers Real Mona FC will step into uncharted territory on Saturday when they face three-time defending champions Frazsiers Whip FC in the first leg of the Jamaica Women’s Premier League semi-final, a milestone that carries deep personal meaning for every member of the squad and the man who built them.
The Neo Oxford-led side entered the 2025/26 season as a brand new team, yet navigated a competitive 12-team field to become the first new entrant in Jamaica Women’s Premier League history to reach the semi-final stage. However, for Oxford, the achievement runs far deeper than football.
“Words can’t explain what this means to us,” he said. “Ninety per cent of these girls are from Reina’s Academy, girls who were told they weren’t good enough and were either forgotten or rejected by the junior national teams. So we joined the league to prove a point, which made eliminating Cavalier even sweeter.”
The sense of purpose has fuelled Real Mona’s entire campaign. Oxford has built not just a squad, but a sisterhood rooted in years of development.
“The team has been just that, a team! Working together, working for each other. These are girls who for the past couple of years have been growing together, learning together, so now they are executing together,” Oxford said.
The foundation for that execution was laid well before the JWPL season began. Oxford has been exposing his players to high-level competition internationally, with results that speak for themselves.
“Two years ago we ventured to Trinidad where we beat the Trinidad national U20 team. Last year we went on tour in Florida, playing against National Academy Champion Team Boca and NAIA Champion Miami Dade,” he highlighted. “Playing the Premier League is helping us to continue what our major goal is which is keeping these girls sharp and ready for college and professional opportunities.”
On Saturday, these same players face their biggest local football test yet.
Frazsiers Whip, who arrive at the semifinal as overwhelming favourites, a dominant, experienced side that has gone unbeaten through much of the season.
Oxford is respectful, but unbothered by the weight of expectation.
“We have made history this season. To some, we don’t deserve to be here, but we know better. So the pressure is not on us,” he said. “It’s our first time playing Frazsiers Whip. Looking at their squad, they have a Goliath of a team. No fear resides here, however — but we will respect them.”
Regardless of Saturday’s results Real Mona are already champions.
Real Mona ended in second place in Zone A on 17 points, edging last year’s beaten finalists Cavalier (15 points) for the last semi-final spot.
They will play Frazsiers Whip at 6:00pm in the second semi-final at the JFF/Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence. Arnett Gardens and Real Mona will meet in the curtain raiser at 3:00 pm.
The second leg will take place at the same venue next week with the final set for the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on May 30.
