MoBay United grab first-leg advantage after late Cavalier own goal
Montego Bay United are one game away from the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) final after securing a 1-0 win over defending champions Cavalier FC in the first-leg semi-final football match at the National Stadium on Sunday.
After 90 minutes without a goal in the tense contest, Montego Bay earned a priceless advantage when Cavalier midfielder Adrian Reid Jr conceded an own goal in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.
The result means Xavier Gilbert-coached Montego Bay only need a draw in the second leg at the National Stadium on Wednesday to book their spot in Sunday’s final, where they will meet either Concacaf Caribbean Cup champions Mount Pleasant Football Academy or Portmore United.
Cavalier, in their eighth-straight semi-finals, will have to win outright if they are to make their fourth final in a row, having won the last two JPL titles.
It was a game of attack versus defence in the first leg last evening as Montego Bay dominated the offensive statistics.
The St James-based club had an incredible 18 shots compared to Cavalier’s one and also held 68 per cent of the ball possession.
Cavalier goalkeeper Jamari Gordon pulled out several saves in the second half, including from a long-range effort from Dwight Merrick which had seemed destined for goal.
Rudolph Speid’s Cavalier looked set to go into the second leg with honours even. But Montego Bay won a corner kick in the 93rd minute and Reid Jr inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after it evaded a throng of players in front of him.
