Champions Frazsiers Whip march into JWPL final
DEFENDING champions Frazsiers Whip are through to their fourth-consecutive final after drawing 1-1 with Real Mona in the second leg of the Jamaica Womens Premier League semi-finals, winning the two-legged tie 6-1 on aggregate.
Frazsiers Whip marched into yet another title match and will be hunting their fifth-consecutive win after finishing off a young but spirited Real Mona aggregation at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence, The UWI, yesterday.
Nevillegail Able gave Frazsiers Whip an early lead, scoring in the 11th minute, and effectively killed off any slim hopes Real Mona might have harboured of overturning the five-goal deficit from the first leg.
But Real Mona showed courage and fought back with a goal courtesy of Breanna Marr in the 33rd minute.
Expectations were that Frazsiers Whip would run away with the second leg but Real Mona held their own and made a fight of it, showing that they will be a force to be reckoned with next season and beyond.
Real Mona, under the guidance of Coach Neo Oxford, made a return to the top flight for the first time since 2019 and remarkably reached the semi-finals with a team averaging 17 years old.
However, Frazsiers Whip started a much-changed team, resting several players who were crucial in their 5-0 first-leg victory.
“Yeah, we changed it up a little bit. The front three that started the last game, I put them on rest because they were nursing a yellow card,” Head Coach Courtney Dowdie told the Jamaica Observer.
He continued: “And a yellow card today means they would miss the final, so I went ahead with a brand new front three just to test out what we have. I think we played well defensively but up front, we didn’t capitalise on the chances that we got.”
Frazsiers Whip now await the winner of the other semi-final between Arnett Gardens and Los Perfectos, with the Junglists holding a 3-2 advantage. That match was scheduled for 6:00 pm yesterday.
“When we started the year, one of the objectives was to reach the final. We are now in the final so it’s just to take it from there,” said Dowdie.
“But I’m pleased with the performance, but we were due a bad game when you look at it. We have been doing well all season [so] we were due a bad game,” he reasoned.
“Mona came today, they played well. You know, I told the coach that probably [this] is the biggest draw in his club’s history — you know, to draw with the defending champion,” Dowdie added.
Meanwhile, head coach of Real Mona Neo Oxford said his team achieved a morale-boosting result.
“We have destroyed Frazsier’s 100 per cent record this season — I think that’s a trophy for us. This is also a moment for us to be good for next season,” said Oxford.
“The butterflies were gone in this leg. I think Frazsiers Whip took their foot off the gas a bit. They didn’t think that we’d have come out here,” Oxford stated.
The final will take place at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on May 30.
