Foreman, Johnson and Lindsay book tickets to NCAA Outdoor Nationals
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Long jumpers Aaliyah Lindsay of Kansas State and Shantae Foreman of Clemson as well as shot putter Britannie Johnson of Purdue all punched their tickets for the NCAA National Outdoors Championships on Thursday’s second day of the Regionals.
Aaliyah Lindsay produced a big personal best 6.55m (1.1m/s) on her third and final round to place fourth at the West Regionals being held at the University of Arkansas and her first qualification to the nationals to be held at the University of Oregon in June.
Her jump beat her previous best 6.42m, which she set for second at the Big 12 Championships and saw her tie for second all-time at Kansas State.
Foreman took just one jump and her 6.47m (-0.5m/s) was good for second best overall at the Eastern Regionals that are being held at the University of Kentucky.
Also at the East Regional, Johnson threw a personal best 16.91m, ninth best and better than her previous best 16.62 and will also make her first trip to the nationals.
Clemson’s Kimeka Smith just missed the cut, finishing 13th with 16.74m.
Meanwhile, Gabrielle Matthews of the University of Florida has advanced to Saturday’s second round in both the 100m and 200m events at the East Regionals.
Matthews ran 11.08 seconds (0.3m/s) in the 100m, while Shenese Walker of Florida State also advanced with 11.15 seconds (-0.3m/s).
Matthews then ran 22.68 seconds (0.9m/s) in the 200m to secure her place in the next round.
Five sprint hurdlers also advanced in the 100m hurdles, led by Clemson’s Oneka Wilson who ran 12.79 seconds (3.0m/s), followed by Janela Spencer of Ohio State 12.83 seconds (0.2m/s), Salieci Myles of Louisiana State- 13.04 seconds (0.3m/s).
Briana Campbell of Clemson University ran a personal best 13.10 seconds (1.0m/s) and Danae Nembhard of Auburn clocked 13.23 seconds (0.0m/s).
Dejanea Oakley of the University of Georgia clocked 50.60 seconds to make progress in the 400m with Rushana Dwyer of Northwestern State running a personal best 51.03 seconds to qualify.
Shaquena Foote of Georgia missed out after she could only muster 52.29 seconds.
At the West Regional, Carleta Bernard of Texas who missed the SEC Championships returned to run 11.23 seconds (0.0m/s) and advance in the 100m, along with teammate Abigail Wolfe- 11.33 seconds (0.3m/s).
Tonie Ann Forbes of Texas Tech will run in the second round of the 100m hurdles after she clocked 13.23 seconds (1.2m/s), while Shadae Findley of the University of Texas-San Antonio qualified for the second round in the 400m after she ran 52.55 seconds.
