DaCosta dominates with four-winner haul on Saturday card
Four-time defending champion trainer shows his class with Purosangue, Himaya, Fred The Master, and Eye of the Tiger
Jason DaCosta reminded everyone, on Saturday, May 23, 2026, why he’s the four-time defending champion trainer, saddling four winners to highlight the nine-race card.
DaCosta’s winning quartet were Purosangue, Himaya, Fred The Master, and Eye of the Tiger, giving him a commanding presence on the day’s programme.
The standout performance came from American-bred Purosangue, ridden by Tevin Foster, who romped to an easy 8 ¼-length win in the $1.05-million Maiden Special Weight for native-bred and imported three-year-olds over one mile (1,600m).
After a slow start, the chestnut colt surged to the front approaching the six-furlong (1,200m) mark and never looked back. Purosangue led home Unbelievable Power with Ian Spence, and Comuna Trece with Raddesh Roman, stopping the clock at 1:38.4. The fractions read 24.1, 47.0, 1:12.4, and 1:25.4.
“He is an improving three-year-old and he has always been showing us that he wanted to go long. The longer the better for him and he is improving at the right time,” DaCosta told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“Today, he had to do all the work himself but he is going to enjoy it more when he gets a pace to run. He is a good long-distance horse, one that you are going to hear a lot about in the future. We will see how he comes out of this race and we will choose a race for him in the class above,” he added.
Himaya, ridden by Shaheem Gordon, produced a late surge to beat Sir Wong Don (Raddesh Roman) on the wire in the $790,000 three-year-old and upward Optional Claiming ($500,000-$400,000) event that included native-bred six-year-olds and upward (non-winners of four) over seven furlongs (1,400m).
The five-year-old roan mare got home in the nick of time to win by a head in a time of 1:30.1 (23.2 x 47.4 x 1:15.1). Money Box (Romane Gordon) finished third.
Four-year-old American-bred bay colt Fred The Master was victorious in the $1.19-million Restricted Stakes contest for imported three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) and native-bred three-year-olds and four-year-olds (non-winners of four) over six furlongs.
Robert Halledeen put Fred The Master in front and that was that as he romped home by 5½ lengths ahead of
Mulligan Man (Jaheim Anderson) and Star Quest (Shaheem Gordon) in a time of 1:12.2 (23.2 x 47.2 x 59.3).
Eye of the Tiger was also an impressive winner as the three-year-old bay colt made one move to win by 8¾ lengths in the $1.05-million Maiden Condition Race for native-bred three-year-olds over five furlongs (1,000m) round.
Ridden by Abigail Able, Eye of the Tiger ran the distance in a quick 59.4 seconds (23.4 x 47.3), beating Dark Authority (Raddesh Roman) and Golden Ambassador (Tevin Foster).
