Gordon marks return with win as Himaya storms late to land thriller
Apprentice jockey Shaheem Gordon marked his return to competitive racing with a win on Saturday, May 23, guiding Himaya to a last-stride victory in the fourth race at Caymanas Park.
It was Gordon’s first ride back after a six-week break following a fall from Get A Pepsi in the 10th race on Easter Monday, April 6, 2026.
The spill left him with a concussion and a short hospital stay. He returned with five rides on the day, with the win aboard the Jason DaCosta-trained Himaya coming in ride number one.
The event was an Optional Claiming for three-year-olds and upward over seven furlongs(1,400m).
At the break, Sir Wong Don with Raddesh Roman took the lead and was tracked by Prince Marshall and
Richie Shakes, while Himaya raced near the back in second-to-last position. Sir Wong Don opened up several lengths turning for home and looked to have the race in safekeeping.
Himaya remained well adrift entering the final two furlongs (400m), but began to find her stride. Gordon angled the roan mare to the inside rails, where she picked up momentum. As Sir Wong Don started to fade,
Himaya’s late burst got her up in the final stride to win by a head.
Money Box with Romane Gordon was a further 4 ½ lengths back in third. The winning time was 1:30.1, with splits of 23.3, 47.4, and 1:15.1. It was Himaya’s third win from 51 starts, pushing her career earnings to close to $3.5 million.
