Reggae Girlz begin Panama prep with intensity
JAMAICA’S senior Reggae Girlz wasted no time getting down to work on Tuesday, opening camp with a sharp, competitive session ahead of two their international friendly games against Panama.
The games will take place at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez Gutierrez in Panama City, Panama, on Friday, June 5, and Monday, June 8.
The games serve as vital build-up for their 2026 Concacaf Women’s Championship against Costa Rica on November 27.
Head coach Hubert Busby liked what he saw from his squad on day one.
“It was a very good training session this morning, enthusiastic group, [I am] obviously very pleased with how they approached it,” Busby said.
“Coming from all parts of the globe, when they came in today and we just work on some things, above everything else it is just obviously a good day to do the stretch of the legs and get them moving from sitting on long flights,” he added.
The session ran one hour and 10 minutes, but Busby said that the players were ready for more. Busby said that it was a good sign — though Tuesday’s focus was measured.
“It was a competitive session and I am sure the players would even want to go longer than the 70 minutes we were on the pitch but today was just about them getting acclimated to the conditions,” Busby explained.
With Costa Rica circled on the calendar, Busby stressed that the Panama friendlies are part of a bigger picture. The staff knows the core group, but the work now is about the details.
“We are just going through our processes. I mean, at the end of the day we know what we need, we know who we need to play the qualifying, but it is all the things in between that we need to focus on for us to improve to get the desired outcome that we want,” he said.
Those “things in between” cover the full tactical spectrum and the depth of the squad. Several players absent in April are back in the fold, giving Busby more options.
“And so we are just making sure that we know that in all aspect of our play about in possession, out of possession, obviously looking at some reintegrating some players in to make sure that our pool is continuing to be strong and that’s good.
“We have some players coming back in who weren’t involved in April for various reasons and so we all looking forward to make sure we have two quality games against a quality opposition,” Busby said.
