MATCH DAY PREDICTIONS

MATCH DAY PREDICTIONS

BRIAN PITTER, journalist

Norway head into this match full of confidence after a convincing 4-1 victory over Iraq in their opening game, with Erling Haaland scoring twice on his World Cup debut. The Manchester City striker will once again be key if Norway are to strengthen their hopes of advancing from Group I.

However, they face a Senegal side eager to remind everyone why they were widely considered Africa’s strongest team heading into the tournament. Although they fell 1-3 to France, Senegal impressed for large spells, particularly in the first half when they created problems for Les Bleus before being overpowered after the break.

Senegal will need another fast start and must be more clinical in front of goal, because if they allow Haaland and Norway too much space, they could be punished. I expect this to be a close and entertaining contest, but I believe Norway will edge it 2-1.

Other predictions

Argentina 3, Austria 1

France 4, Iraq 0

Jordan 1, Algeria 2

RACHID PARCHMENT, journalist

This should be a cracking game. Senegal might not have got the start they wanted, but they pushed France for much of their first encounter in spite of a 1-3 loss. Nicolas Jackson will need to be better at finishing his chances when they fall to him, and Kalidou Koulibaly must be switched on at all times to keep one of the best strikers in the world in Erling Haaland quiet. He’ll have learnt that lesson, having to deal with another of the best in the world, Kylian Mbappe, in the last game.

For Norway, they must not get carried away with their result against Iraq as this will be a much tougher opponent. Antonio Nusa will have less freedom to roam the left wing, but his pace and trickery will be a handful for Senegal right back Krepin Diatta.

Captain Martin Odegaard will need to lead by example and deliver a big game. He’s capable of that although his form has been a bit inconsistent in recent times.

This will be an intriguing one that I get the feeling ends in a 2-2 stalemate.

DANIEL BLAKE, journalist

Senegal’s approach to the game will be very important as they virtually need to win the game to advance. They did worry the French defence a few times in the opening game but not enough to make a real impact. Norway, on the other hand, always manage to find a goal as seen in their dominant win over Iraq. Erling Haaland again will be looking to continue his golden boot push, while Nicolas Jackson, Sadio Mane, and Ismaila Sarr need to be far more active if the Senegalese are to stand a chance. However, I predict a 2-1 win for Norway.

Other predictions

Argentina 2, Austria 0

France 4, Iraq 0

Jordan 1, Algeria 2
