25th SVL Anniversary Trophy explodes into Supernatural Power vs Nautical Star
THE 25th staging of the Supreme Ventures Limited Anniversary (SVL) Trophy isn’t just another Open Allowance contest, it’s a $1.4-million, one-mile (1,600m) war for three-year-olds and upward.
And the whispers at Caymanas Park are deafening: This boils down to Supernatural Power versus Nautical Star.
The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide breaks down the field but let’s call it what it is — a two-horse collision course.
1. DON KWESI: (4 b c by Sensational Slam – Lookatmenow) – Comes into this race on the heels of three straight wins. Don Kwesi’s confidence level is sky-high at the moment as he one of those with the “most improved” tag everyone’s talking about. The problem here is that he’s walking into a buzzsaw. The streak ends here against real class.
2. SUPERNATURAL POWER (USA): (4 gr f by Cross Traffic – Urquia) – This filly is exactly what her name says. New trainer Adrian Prince takes the reins from Philip Feanny, and she’s responding to exercise gallops. She demolished this same mile on April 25, winning by 11 lengths in 1:35.3 like she was out for a gallop. Before that, she was second to Rideallday in a record Ian Levy Cup run. She’s fast, she’s tough, and she’s peaking. Expect another dominant run.
3. SENSATIONAL SOUL: (4 ch c by Soul Warrior – Red Gold) – Straight talk: No winning chance here. Outgunned.
4. NAUTICAL STAR (USA): (6 dk b/br h by Dixie Chatter – Kiss Me Chocolate) — The foreign raider with local bite. Two wins from three starts on Jamaican soil so far for Nautical Star. He was last seen finishing third behind Legacy Isle in a record Eros Trophy over seven furlongs (1,400m) on June 6. He’s been training like a monster coming in. Speed to burn, heart to match. If anyone can go toe to toe with Supernatural Power, it’s Nautical Star. This is a fight.
5. SHEER DELIGHT (USA): (5 dk b h by Girvin – Pantyhose) – Safe to bypass. Not in this league.
6. BARNABY (USA): (5 b h by Tapiture – Giants Diva) – The spoiler. Two wins from five starts this season so far. Fifth last out behind Funcaandun, but the mile is his sweet spot. Barnaby will relish the trip. If the top two knock each other out he’s the one lurking to steal it. Don’t completely ignore him.
