Ras Fraser Jr carries the legacy forward with ‘Come Mek We Take A Talk’
As the son of veteran reggae singer Phillip Fraser, Ras Fraser Jr has music flowing through his veins.
However, while he proudly embraces his family’s legacy, he is equally determined to carve out his own path in the industry through authentic, conscious reggae music.
Reflecting on his journey so far, Ras Fraser Jr describes it as rewarding but challenging.
“The journey within the music industry has been tremendously great so far and could be even greater. The journey to greatness is never easy, but my team and I are always working towards betterment,” he said.
Growing up around his father had a profound impact on his love for music.
“The influence and inspiration I get from being around Mr Fraser is priceless. Seeing people sing along to his songs and the joy on their faces made me fall deeply in love with music,” he explained.
Known for his distinctive vocal delivery, Ras Fraser Jr believes his sound is rooted in tradition.
“I am blessed with a wailing, authentic, angelic and melodious sound from the ancestors. That is what sets me apart,” he shared.
His latest single, Come Mek We Take A Talk, produced by Ralston Barrett and featured on the Jailhouse Set Me Free Riddim Vol 1, draws inspiration from Jamaican cultural icon Louise Bennett-Coverley, affectionately known as Miss Lou.
“This song is a tribute to Miss Lou. I used one of her famous sayings in the hook and gave it a little twist. It is a song that motivates people, lifts their spirits, and teaches them about their history,” he said.
The song also carries a timely message of unity and dialogue.
“Come mek we walk down memory lane, reason like friends and talk. The world is big enough for all of us. With so much going on right now, this is the kind of message we need.”
Ras Fraser Jr credits Barrett’s honesty and experience for making the collaboration a positive one.
“He’s like an uncle to me in the music industry. If he thinks you can do better, he will tell you, and I respect that. The experience was great,” he said.
He was immediately drawn to the riddim’s emotional depth.
“The riddim is full of feeling. The instrumental was practically telling me what to say. I simply went with the flow,” Ras Fraser Jr said.
The artiste says he is grateful to be featured alongside a talented lineup of performers on the project.
“It’s a privilege working with such magnificent artistes. As the saying goes, iron sharpens iron,” he said.
Over the years, Ras Fraser Jr has accumulated several career highlights, including having his music featured in television and commercial productions. Among his proudest moments are hearing Fireman featured in Criminal Minds, Bounce and Galang used on Netflix and Peacock TV, and Music Is Life appearing in a Sprint commercial.
Looking ahead, the reggae artiste has ambitious plans, including new albums, singles, collaborations, live performances, and international opportunities.
“I want to achieve all the glory music has to offer. The shows, interviews, movies, and everything that comes with working hard and putting out good music,” he said.
