UK-based reggae artiste ‘sets sail’ towards global success
The United Kingdom (UK) has produced several popular reggae acts over the years, including Maxi Priest, UB40, Aswad and Steel Pulse. Today, Baddiz, a Jamaican singer based in the UK, is hoping to trod that familiar path to global success.
The conscious entertainer is building momentum with his singles My Heart and I’m Sailing, which have been enjoying strong rotation in Jamaica and across the diaspora. Speaking of the inspiration behind each song, the entertainer shared that his main musical goal is to mentor youth through his catalogue.
“My Heart is inspired by my life story, growing up in the ghetto, facing struggles and later getting the opportunity to migrate to the UK,” Baddiz said. “I want youths to be patient, stay humble and avoid violence, gangs and guns so they can create better opportunities for themselves.”
I’m Sailing was inspired by a late-night trip to Birmingham to visit his brother. While experimenting with melodies alongside his nephew, an earthquake struck, and the experience sparked the song.
“The words ‘I’m Sailing’ just came to me,” he recalled. “It represents my journey and my faith that Jah is guiding me from shore to shore to spread positive messages.”
The growing exposure has led to increased streams, new social media followers and requests for exclusive dubplates.
Living in the UK has also strengthened Baddiz’s work ethic. By day, he works as a bus and coach driver, investing his earnings into his music while drawing inspiration from everyday life.
“My goal is to keep releasing quality music that motivates people and gives them hope,” he said.
Based on the momentum surrounding his latest releases, Baddiz is planning to visit Jamaica in the coming months to ramp up promotion, connect with the local music industry and begin work on new projects.
With more singles, videos and media appearances in the pipeline, Baddiz is confident he can establish himself among the next generation of reggae artistes flying the flag for the UK.
