KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man believed to be of unsound mind interrupted proceedings in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday during an appearance on charges of shop breaking and simple larceny.

Fabian Lewis appeared before the court, where it was indicated that he may require a psychiatric evaluation before the case can proceed.

As Presiding Judge Peter Wilson explained the matter and the discussions taking place, Lewis interrupted, saying he had been on his own all his life and that the Government had never done anything to help him. He argued that the court process was being used to discourage and put him down.

Wilson stopped Lewis and told him his comments were troubling, particularly as the Government of Jamaica was paying for his legal representation.

Lewis continued his outburst, saying it would be better if they killed him than put him through the process. He also questioned how he could be accused of shop breaking and labelled a thief when, according to him, nothing had been taken.

The courtroom was visibly disturbed by the exchange.

Wilson said he was troubled by Lewis’ behaviour and reiterated that a psychiatric evaluation was necessary before the matter could proceed.

Lewis is scheduled to return to court on October 5.
