Beckford, Prince win gold medals at Commonwealth Games

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica landed two gold medals on the first day of track and field at the Commonwealth Games after Romaine Beckford won the first ever men’s high jump and Demario Prince won Jamaica’s fourth straight gold in the 110m hurdles at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday.

Beckford, who was eighth four years ago in Birmingham, and failed to clear a height at last year’s World Athletics championships in Tokyo, cleared 2.25m to edge India’s Sarvesh Anil Kushare, who also cleared that height with England’s Kimani Kack third with 2.20m.

Two-time World Indoor bronze medalist Raymond Richards just missed a medal, placing fourth also with 2.20m.

Minutes later, Prince executed a brilliant race, winning the 110m hurdles in 13.17 seconds (0.4m/s), finishing ahead of England’s Samuel Bennett who ran a personal best 13.30 seconds and Milan Trajkvoc ran a season’s best 12.32 seconds to win Cyprus’ first medal in the event.

Jerome Campbell was sixth in 13.86 seconds.
