NCU’s next chapter
Dear Editor,
Yesterday’s announcement of the appointment of Dr Balvin Braham as the new president of Northern Caribbean University (NCU) was greeted with great interest and optimism. Emerging as the successful candidate from a distinguished field of eminent applicants, his selection is a fitting recognition of a lifetime of exemplary Christian leadership and faithful service.
I have known Dr Braham to be a man whose life story is a powerful testimony to the possibilities that arise from humble beginnings. Raised in mountainside, rural St Elizabeth, his journey is a poignant tribute to the enduring values cultivated in Jamaica’s remote communities — faith, resilience, integrity, hard work, and perseverance. His life affirms that greatness is not determined by one’s place of birth, but by one’s commitment to purpose and service.
Throughout his ministry and administrative career, Dr Braham has consistently distinguished himself as an exceptional servant leader. He has faithfully served as a pastor, youth director of the Jamaica Union Conference, president of the West Jamaica Conference, and lately as vice-president of the Inter-American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, where his influence has extended across more than 20 countries. In every assignment entrusted to him, his leadership has been marked by vision, innovation, excellence, and measurable achievement. His record of service has been nothing short of stellar.
One of his defining qualities is his genuine passion and compassion for young people. For decades, he has invested in developing youth, mentoring emerging leaders, and inspiring countless individuals to pursue excellence while remaining anchored in Christian principles. The old adage that “past performance is the best predictor of future success” seems particularly fitting in his case. His history of faithful stewardship provides every reason to believe that NCU is in capable hands.
Dr Braham is a leader whose work and integrity speak for themselves. He has earned widespread respect through his humility, honesty, diligence, and unwavering commitment to God’s mission. These qualities have become the hallmark of his leadership and have inspired confidence wherever he has served.
Northern Caribbean University occupies a special place in Jamaica’s educational landscape. For well over a century, the institution has prepared graduates who have gone on to distinguish themselves as educators, physicians, nurses, business executives, ministers, scientists, entrepreneurs, public servants, and community leaders throughout Jamaica, the Caribbean, and beyond. Its commitment to academic excellence, Christian values, holistic education, and service has made it one of the region’s most respected faith-based universities.
As Dr Braham assumes the presidency, he does so at a defining moment in the university’s history. NCU continues to pursue campus expansion, structural renovations, modern lecture theatres, technological advancement, and improved infrastructure while preserving the Christian values and distinctive mission upon which it was founded.
Leading a private liberal arts university without direct government funding presents formidable financial and administrative challenges. The task before him is indeed Herculean. Yet those who have followed his ministry know that he approaches challenges with faith, careful planning, collaborative leadership, and unwavering trust in divine guidance. These qualities will undoubtedly serve him well as he leads the university into its next chapter.
As a fellow Jamaican and parishoner, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Dr Braham on this historic appointment. I pray that God will grant him wisdom, strength, courage, and discernment as he leads NCU. May his presidency strengthen the institution’s Christian mission, expand its influence, and leave a monumental legacy that will inspire generations of students yet to come.
Indeed, if character is the foundation of leadership and service is its highest expression, then NCU has chosen a president prepared for such a time as this.
