A casual journey through the historic town of Savanna-la-Mar, which held the distinction of being the top commercial area in the western region of the island in the 1980s, leaves much to be desired — major thoroughfares are riddled with potholes, a journey of “rock-an-cum-een” as you make your way; garbage pile-ups, an epidemic waiting to strike; poor drainage management, flooding at a mere drip of the clouds; and not to mention the risk of casualties to pedestrians.

Where do residents get the appropriate representation to have these matters addressed? The aftermath of Hurricane Melissa highlighted some inefficiencies of the guard and brought much to the fore to be analysed by the discerning mind.

The internal workings attempted to address the festering sore, but were stopped in their tracks. Savanna-la-Mar now needs the external workings to cut out the festering sore through the appropriate incisions.

A conscious awakening of the mind is urgently needed in the space to restore the glory days of Savanna-la-Mar. The current guard needs to be removed forthwith and a guard of substance, true virtue, as well as effective and coherent leadership needs to be installed immediately.
