Nelson boots 4 winners in Canada
Jamaican ace takes Juvenile Stakes and Oaks at Century Mile
FOUR-TIME Jamaican champion jockey Dane “Warrior Chief” Nelson enjoyed his best weekend yet this season at Century Mile racetrack in Edmonton, Canada, riding four winners including two Stakes races on Friday and Saturday, August 21-22, 2026.
Nelson, who won three riding titles in Canada (two at Century Mile and one at Century Downs), showed his class on both nights to take the CAN$50,000 Canadian Juvenile Stakes and the CAN$100,000 Century Casino Oaks.
On opening night Nelson got the job done aboard Cowboy Now in the Canadian Juvenile Stakes over six furlongs. Cowboy Now was squeezed for room approaching the distance but Nelson angled out in mid-stretch and the bay gelding got up in the final strides to beat
Bakken Town (Enrique Gonzalez) by a half-length. The winning time was 1:12.4.
The highlight came 24 hours later when Nelson guided 4-5 favourite Playful to an easy victory in the Century Casino Oaks over 1 1/8 miles. Playful sat off the early pace, then circled rivals on the final turn before drawing off to win by 4½ lengths over Sixty Six (Kyle Carter) in 1:53.3.
He had two more earlier on the 12-race Saturday card — Puttingonthefoil, who won an Optional Claiming over one mile and 70 yards by 1¼ lengths over Titian (Amadeo Perez) in 1:43.0; and Glava who took the Starter Optional Claiming over six furlongs by a length over
Jeff Fa (Kyle Carter) in 1:10.3.
With those four winners Nelson took his seasonal tally to 23 winners at Century Mile and 24 overall, after recently winning the CAN$125,000 Manitoba Derby aboard Western Warrior at Assiniboia Downs.
