Congratulations, George Davis
George Davis.
Letters
September 3, 2026

Congratulations, George Davis

Dear Editor,

I write to congratulate the Sir Garfield Sobers of regional media, George Sylvester Davis, on being conferred with a national award, the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander.

The verbal attacks Davis has been coming under on social media from individuals, including political mercenaries and an attention-seeking newspaper columnist, were predictable. The attacks have come since the award was announced and is symptomatic of the ‘badminded’ nature of sections of Jamaica society.

What his critics will not tell you is that Davis, in my opinion, is the most well-rounded journalist to have emerged out of Jamaica over the past 50 years. No one in media has his diverse portfolio, along with his penetration of local, regional, and international platforms.

Whether it is news and current affairs, sports, lifestyle-oriented programming, or entertainment, Davis has displayed a high level of competence over the past 21 years.

Simply put, Davis does well at everything in broadcast media.

I note that Davis has provided commentary and analysis on sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, Summer and Winter Olympics, Copa America, and all of the major track and field events on the local calendar.

This coupled with his mastery of news and current affairs events, including general and local government elections in Jamaica and other Caribbean countries, which add to the diversity of his portfolio.

I remember Davis fondly during his time at SportsMax, where he led the SportsMax Zone, a weekday sports and lifestyle magazine show which reached a vast audience in the Caribbean and United States.

I also remember his competent oversight for CEEN News, a nightly live news feature prepared for the Jamaican Diaspora in the United States and Canada and used to read his columns in The Gleaner with interest.

I want to say to Davis: Ignore the verbal barbs from the covetous. You have done well.
