KINGSTON, Jamaica — A taxi driver narrowly escaped serious injuries and even possible death after he was attacked by a gunman on White Road in West Kingston on Thursday.

The 46-year-old cabbie had to run from his vehicle as he fled from the gunman who had been posing as a passenger, the police said.

Reports reaching Observer Online indicated that around 5:50 pm, the cabbie was transporting passengers when a man boarded the vehicle and said he was going to White Road.

Police said upon reaching a section of White Road near the Calvary Cemetery, the man asked for a stop.

When the car stopped, the taxi driver attempted to collect his fare, but the man pulled a firearm and fired one shot at him, causing a graze to his right arm. The men then exited the vehicle.

The suspect, the police added, went around the vehicle, pointed the firearm in the cabbie’s direction again and tried to fire the weapon.

Upon seeing this, the taxi driver escaped through the front passenger door and ran into the Greenwich Park community. Another cabbie helped him to the Trench Town Police Station.

Upon making a report, the taxi driver was transported to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police believe the cabbie may have been attacked because of an argument and eventual fight he had with a man in Cross Road, St Andrew, some weeks ago.

They have since launched a man for the gunmen who escaped on foot in the area.
