KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, visited one of the children injured in Friday’s incident in St Elizabeth, who is currently receiving treatment at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).

Three children were injured after reportedly being struck by a boulder while walking along a railway track on their way to Merry Wood Primary School on Friday morning. Reports indicate that residents frequently use the railway track as a shorter route between communities in the area.

Of the three children involved, one has since been treated and released, while one remains at the Black River Hospital and the third is receiving intensive care at UHWI.

During her visit, Minister Morris Dixon spoke with the parent of the child at UHWI and expressed support on behalf of the Ministry.

“This is an extremely distressing situation for the children and their parents. No one imagines these acts of nature taking place and their children being affected in this way. My thoughts are with all three children and their families as they recover from this frightening experience, and I know Jamaica is praying for the full and speedy recovery of both children who remain in hospital and for the continued recovery of the child who has been released.”

The Ministry said it will remain attentive to the welfare of the affected students, their families and the school community as the children continue their recovery.
