7 equipment-based exercises for toned arms
STRONG, toned arms are a fitness goal for many people, and the good news is that gym equipment can make building arm strength more effective and manageable.
“While you cannot target fat loss in your arms alone, strengthening the muscles in your biceps, triceps and shoulders can help create a more defined appearance as part of an overall fitness routine,” explained fitness trainer Giovanie White.
From cables, kettle bells and dumbbells to resistance machines, here are seven equipment-based exercises White said can help you build stronger, more toned arms.
1) Dumbbell biceps curls
Dumbbell biceps curls are a classic exercise for strengthening and developing the biceps.
How to execute: Hold a dumbbell in each hand with your arms by your sides. Slowly curl the weights toward your shoulders, squeezing your biceps at the top before lowering them back down with control.
“Avoid swinging your body to lift the weights. Let your arms do the work,” White said.
2) Cable triceps push downs
The cable triceps push down is excellent for targeting the muscles at the back of your upper arms.
How to execute: Stand facing a cable machine, grip the bar or rope attachment, and push downward until your arms are almost fully extended. Slowly return to the starting position.
Tip: Keep your elbows close to your body throughout the movement.
3) Dumbbell shoulder press
Although primarily a shoulder exercise, the dumbbell shoulder press also engages the triceps and helps build stronger, more defined upper arms.
How to execute: Hold dumbbells at shoulder height and press them overhead until your arms are extended. Lower the weights slowly and repeat.
Tip: Choose a weight you can control without arching your back excessively.
4) Cable biceps curls
Cable curls provide constant tension throughout the movement, making them an effective alternative to traditional dumbbell curls.
How to execute: Stand facing the cable machine, grasp the attachment with an underhand grip and curl your hands toward your shoulders. Slowly lower the weight back down,” said White.
Tip: Keep your upper arms still and focus on squeezing your biceps.
5) Triceps extension machine
The triceps extension machine is a beginner-friendly option for isolating the triceps.
How to execute: Adjust the seat and weight appropriately, grip the handles and extend your arms against the resistance. Slowly return to the starting position.
Tip: Avoid locking your elbows aggressively at the end of the movement.
6) Dumbbell hammer curls
Hammer curls target the biceps and forearms while helping to build overall arm strength.
How to execute: Hold the dumbbells with your palms facing each other. Curl the weights toward your shoulders while keeping your wrists in a neutral position, then slowly lower them.
Tip: Keep your elbows close to your sides and avoid using momentum.
7) Cable overhead triceps extensions
This exercise effectively targets the triceps, particularly when performed with a rope attachment.
How to execute: Facing away from or toward the cable machine depending on the setup, position the rope overhead and extend your arms while keeping your elbows relatively stable. Slowly return to the starting position.
Tip: Use a controlled range of motion and start with a manageable weight.
“Building toned arms takes consistency, proper training and overall healthy habits,” White said. “Including a combination of biceps, triceps and shoulder exercises in your workout routine, gradually increases resistance as you get stronger and allow your muscles time to recover.”
He said combined with regular physical activity and balanced nutrition, these exercises can help you develop stronger, more defined arms over time.
