2026 Kia Sportage: Still a top contender

2026 Kia Sportage: Still a top contender

Kia continues to blaze its own path in the vicious war that is the compact sport utility vehicle segment to much success. Leading this fight is the Sportage nameplate.

Venerable to the brand, but a relative newcomer in relation to class rivals, the Sportage, in X-Line trim, is a formidable option for buyers, and that continues strongly with the 2026 update.

EXTERIOR

The Sportage long made the transition from the visual conservatism that persists in the competition. For 2026 it has embraced its science-fiction looks even further. The arrow-shaped lighting has been converted to a mostly vertical configuration. This gives the Sportage a very distinct signature at night. The rear lights have been tweaked as well. Body lines are still sharp and angular. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard for the X-Line. A few new colours, including returning matte paint options, can make the Sportage stand out even further in the SUV malaise that affects modern parking lots.

Access is via the traditional Kia detonator style key fob. Once past the keyless entry, the leather multi-function seats slide back and forth to aid ingress and egress for a taste of the premium life, as do the welcoming lit door handles. The roomy cabin isn’t as radical as the outside, having a clean, modern design that is very technology-forward.

Material choice and build quality are high, with soft-touch elements at the main contact points. Part of the ergonomic layout is that many functions have been moved into the infotainment screen. The few physical buttons are for frequently used features, like dual-zone climate and audio.

A wireless charging pad sits in the centre console alongside several storage solutions around the interior. The panoramic sunroof delivers a sense of space to all occupants. Not that rear passengers are wanting for much with amenities like heated seats. Front seats have both ventilation and heat. A refined cabin keeps exterior noises to a minimum while maximising the quality stereo system. At night, the ambient lighting provides a similar function.

Behind the ‘Squircle’ steering wheel is digital instrumentation that melds into the 12.3-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. Things run fast, smooth, and with clarity on both screens. Especially important, a live camera feed of either side of the vehicle pops up whenever the indicators are used. USB ports are plentiful, and smartphone connectivity is a breeze.

ON THE ROAD

A rarity in the compact SUV segment, the 2-litre turbodiesel returns as powerful, as frugal, and as polished as before to motivate the Sportage X-Line and pay homage to the original ethos of the SUV. Rory Daley

Where the Sportage has always lifted itself above the rest is its drivetrain. However, even it cannot stop the march of demands from the modern SUV buyer.

For 2026, the X-Line can now be had in either petrol or diesel. This expands the market for the Sportage, while still appeasing those who still hold dear the ethos of an SUV. Those still stuck with the vision of clattering and black smoke should know Kia has long banished these things. The 2-litre turbodiesel delivers its wallop of low-end torque in a vigorously linear manner, pulling the Sportage along effortlessly to real-world speeds. It never intrudes negatively in any manner on the driving experience, including the pump, as frugality is another trait it possesses.

The transmission is just as invisible, unless the paddle shifters are engaged. Even then, the shifts are fast and flowing. Suspension-wise, the Sportage treads the fine line between comfort and control, never being harsh or too soft to upset occupants. Along with the all-wheel-drive system, the Kia inspires confidence over a wide variety of road conditions and speeds. Should one not want to drive, the Driver Assist suite can switch from safety to short bouts of supervised autonomous operation.

VERDICT

The Sportage, in X-Line trim, has always kept its connection to the original rules of SUV-dom, diesel power, and all-wheel drive, while layering modernity on top of all. However, even it cannot defy current demands and buying trends. But, rather than giving in, Kia has compromised by offering a petrol option, and — gasp — even front-wheel drive. All that hasn’t affected the Sportage X-Line. It’s still old-school cool, an SUV in touch with its past with an eye towards the future. It’s equipped and drives like something more upmarket, and yet priced like a bargain.
