Grounded in innovation and sustainability

Grounded in innovation and sustainability

As part of the recently held Kia EV Day Central & South America in Quito, Ecuador, participants were introduced to one of the most unique initiatives from the Korean automaker: Kia E-Ground, its sustainable mobility solutions experience centre.

“Kia E-Ground is a milestone in innovation and sustainability in the country. This space symbolises not only Kia’s strong commitment to a cleaner planet, but also our vision of a better-connected future for all,” said Ricardo Rosales, executive president, Kia Ecuador.

Opened in 2024, the building is an experimental study in self-sustainability from the ground up, using the crossroads between environmental management and technology to reduce its carbon footprint and be a hub for the promotion of ecologically friendly living. This includes exposure to and information on Kia’s electric vehicle models. It’s the first and only one of its kind in Latin America, the only such standalone E-Ground worldwide for Kia, and has been a popular visit among Ecuadorians.

The E-Ground building is based on the Fibonacci spiral. Generally experienced in seashells, this mathematical sequence is found in naturally occurring forms and phenomena; from flower buds to human proportions and galaxies.

As a design basis, it gives the Kia E-Ground a unique but familiar shape that determines its internal layout. Further efficiency was found during construction with the use of ECOPact concrete, a material that reduced carbon emissions by up to 50 per cent, and Eco Bricks to build the approximately 15,000-square-foot structure. More innovation could be found in the Pavegen kinetic tiles, which generate clean energy from footsteps. Standard sustainable technologies such as LED lighting, solar panels, rainwater collection, and an integrated garden were used.

Inside its curved walls, E-Ground is designed to represent the three areas Kia deems necessary as the path forward to a sustainable future — planet, energy, and mobility. Planet highlights strategic projects that promote the cleaning and protection of oceans, the provision of green spaces for communities, and recycling. Energy focuses on the maximum utilisation of renewable sources within Kia itself for operations and vehicle production. Mobility looks at Kia’s expanding portfolio of electric vehicles. All three sections provide interactive displays to keep visitor engagement and interest while educating them.

“Kia E-Ground symbolises progress, innovation, and our shared commitment to a sustainable future. We look forward to the incredible discoveries and advancements that will emerge from this space, driving all of us into a brighter, greener tomorrow,” said Steve Lee, president, Kia Central & South America.
