Aubyn Henry calls for lasting investment in Jamaica’s women’s football

Aubyn Henry calls for lasting investment in Jamaica’s women’s football

Sports venture capitalist and founder of AUBYN Sports Management (ASM), Aubyn Henry, is calling for sustained investment in Jamaica’s women’s football programme, arguing that the Reggae Girlz’ international success must translate into greater opportunities for young female players.

Henry said that while the national senior women’s football team’s achievements on the world stage have brought significant recognition to Jamaica, greater emphasis must be placed on developing the infrastructure and programmes needed to sustain that success.

The Reggae Girlz made history by qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019 and 2023, advancing to the Round of 16 at the latter tournament.

Their performances, coupled with the international success of captain Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, have helped raise the profile of women’s football in Jamaica.

However, Henry believes more resources must be directed towards grassroots development, school competitions, coaching, facilities and structured pathways to help young players progress to the professional level.

He also acknowledged improvements in the Jamaica Women’s Premier League under Professional Women’s Football Jamaica Limited (PWFJL), commending Chairperson Christina Hudson for her efforts to strengthen the domestic competition and attract corporate investment.

“Christina Hudson deserves recognition for the work being done to advance women’s football in Jamaica. Building a stronger league, creating opportunities and attracting investment are essential. That progress also reflects the dedication of clubs, administrators, sponsors and everyone working behind the scenes,” Henry said in a statement on Sunday.

Henry argued that investment in women’s football could also generate employment and economic opportunities in areas such as coaching, sports management, sports medicine and media.

He said the long-term development of the sport should be measured not only by the Reggae Girlz’ performances at major international tournaments, but also by the opportunities available to aspiring footballers across the island.

“Every Jamaican dreams of seeing the Reggae Girlz lift that World Cup trophy. But what matters just as much is what happens afterwards. Will the young girl playing football in her community have better facilities, more opportunities and a genuine pathway to success? That is the legacy we should be building,” Henry said.

As Jamaica pursues qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, Henry believes the responsibility extends beyond the players. He said football administrators, corporate Jamaica, schools, clubs and private investors must work together to turn sporting success into sustainable development.

For ASM, the vision is clear: Jamaican sporting excellence should not only be celebrated internationally but leveraged to create opportunities at home.

A World Cup trophy would make history. But building a future where thousands of Jamaican girls can pursue their football dreams? That would be a legacy worth far more than gold.
