Five teams chase daCosta Cup last eight

WEATHER permitting, five schools will be looking to secure places in the quarter-finals of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition when the round of 16 continues with eight games today.

The matches were originally scheduled for Tuesday but were postponed because of islandwide rains and the threat of flooding in some areas. The third and final round of matches is set for Saturday.

Six schools that won their opening Round of 16 games on Saturday will be looking to make it two wins from two and strengthen their chances of reaching the last eight.

Cornwall College in Zone 1, Lacovia High and Dinthill Technical in Zone 2, and Glenmuir High in Zone 3 are among the teams that could secure qualification with another win. The outcome of the Zone 4 clash between Munro College and McGrath High will also have implications for qualification.

Munro College are coming off a 4-1 win over Manning’s School, ending the Westmoreland school’s unbeaten record in the daCosta Cup. They will be confident of continuing that form at home.

McGrath, who reached the daCosta Cup quarter-finals last season and the Ben Francis Cup semi-finals, have also enjoyed a strong campaign. They will be looking to build on Saturday’s 2-0 win over Central High and secure another victory.

Jimm Mitchell is the target man for McGrath, while Alex Williams will also be expected to put the Munro defence under pressure.

At the other end, Munro’s coaching staff will be looking to Kajaye Williams to maintain his scoring form, with support from Akel Vespry and Nikosi Foncette.

Carlondo Morris has scored consecutive hat-tricks for Cornwall College, who have netted 10 goals in their last two matches. Cornwall will also be looking to avenge last season’s defeat against Frome Technical.
