Pops YG granted J$500,000 bail after ‘confrontation’ parade, ordered to surrender travel documents
KINGSTON, Jamaica — After nearly two weeks in police custody, Pops YG was granted bail Friday with strict conditions: he must hand over his travel documents, report to the police three times a week and stay away from the complainant and the complainant’s relatives.
The entertainer and TikTok personality whose real name is Ansel Fairclough, faces a charge of having sexual intercourse with a person under 16 years. The Trelawny Parish Court granted him bail in the amount of J$500,000 following an application by his attorney, Donnovan Collins. The bail hearing followed a Monday deadline that put police on the clock.
After Collins challenged Fairclough’s continued detention, Senior Parish Court Judge Vaughn Facey gave investigators until 6:00 pm to charge him or release him. Collins revealed that the police laid the charge before the deadline.
Collins also told Observer Online that he objected to a proposed identification parade. He said police instead conducted what he called a “confrontation parade” after he filed the habeas corpus application.
“We rejected the idea of a formal identification parade, so they had a confrontation where he did not have the protection of his attorney,” Collins told Observer Online.
A confrontation is an informal, police-led visual identification procedure where an eyewitness is brought face-to-face with a single suspect to see if they can confirm that the person is the perpetrator of a crime.
In that type of procedure, a witness is shown a single suspect rather than a lineup.
Fairclough was first arrested in September during a TikTok livestream at his home in Holland Estate, Trelawny. That arrest was part of a separate investigation into suspected lottery scamming. He remains on J$300,000 pre-charge bail in that matter. Collins has said his client maintains his innocence.
Fairclough is expected back in court on December 9 for a case management conference.
