Bad habits that may ruin your workout
SO you desire a ripped stomach, slender legs, carved arms, in essence a lean physique. You do everything in your power to achieve this goal in the least amount of time possible. You overwork yourself in the gym, put yourself on a super strict diet and you keep pushing harder.
But while your intentions are good, there are a few habits that may ruin your workout.
Rohan Gordon, personal trainer at Eden Gardens Wellness Resort and Spa, said certain activities and your diet can hinder your personal fitness goals.
1. Hydrating
According to Gordon, hydrating, though good, can have negative effects. “Hydrating before a competition is good, but drinking a ton load of water before can lead to cramping or nausea, which may make you want to stop.” He said it is better to take a few sips before working out or sip while sweating instead of gulping the water.
2. Wrong choice of foods before workout
Eating the wrong things could be a waste to your workout. “Spicy food can cause heartburn if you plan to do some hill training or even 300 metres shuttle run,” Gordon said. He added that fruits and salads before a workout, though healthy, are not the best choice as the high fibre of the fruits and vegetables will slow down digestion. “This will make you feel bloated and cause the stomach to become filled with gas, which is uncomfortable while working out.”
3. You don’t stretch
Stretching increases your blood flow in your muscles and reduces your risk of injury. “Stretching also increases your flexibility, which makes it easier for you to work out,” Gordon said. “When you’re finished working out it is good to stretch again.”
4. You over-exercise
While you may be motivated and eager to reach your fitness goals, overdoing it may do you more harm than good. If you have heavy legs, feel sore for prolonged periods, and your workout leaves you exhausted rather than energised, it is not a good sign, Gordon said. “Know your limits and that everything takes time; you won’t drop the pounds overnight, be patient with yourself.”
5.You don’t sleep
Depriving yourself of rest is no good. If you push too hard your body will slow down. “When you are well rested, you will be more energised and you will get more from your workout,” Gordon said.
