Diet for eczema relief
ECZEMA, identified as one of the most common skin disorders, can be the source of much frustration and embarrassment with its associated rash, flaking, redness and itching. But nutritionist Donovan Grant says living with eczema does not always have to be a nightmare once the condition is managed well.
“Eczema is a very complicated skin condition and the triggers vary from person to person,” he said, explaining that environmental allergens and substances as well as psychological stress are among the most common.
“However, while finding your triggers could be difficult, this, along with managing your lifestyle, could reduce flares.”
Grant said that in managing eczema, balance in the body is imperative, and it is crucial to scrutinise heavily what is consumed.
“An important part of your eczema care plan should be centred on the food you consume. People with eczema sometimes tend to have certain food allergens; however, there is no clear association between any specific foods and eczema. What has been discovered through research is that certain foods have proven very effective in bringing relief to those with eczema,” Grant said.
Below he provides a diet guide for eczema relief:
• Remove processed carbs and sugars from your diet — this helps to keep the body alkaline.
• Have probiotics, for example, those found in yoghurts.
• Have teas such as green, black and oolong.
• Eat grains, fresh fruits and vegetables with carotenoids or vitamin A. Include foods from other vitamin groups such as B complex, C, D and E.
• Essential fatty acids such as flax, hemp and pumpkin seeds, and fish and coconut oil should be consumed.
• Eat foods from skin-building groups such as proteins and health carbohydrates.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Detox your body as often as you can.
• Try to identify foods that trigger your eczema. Food tests could help to identify these.
Grant also identified stress as a very common trigger for eczema flare-ups. He said that it is important to exercise and sleep or do other activities that will aid in stress control.
