Fight the flab
IT can be safely assumed that no one likes having ‘flabby arms’, especially when you want to wear certain garments like sleeveless tops or dresses.
According to personal trainer and group fitness instructor at Gymkhana, Gisel Harrow, the main reasons for flabby arms are age (sagging skin) and a high body fat percentage (high fat deposits). However, she said you can correct flabby arms by eating right and exercising. Eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water can help in reducing body fat, and adding resistance training will help to tighten and tone your arms.
Below are some exercises recommended by Harrow that can be done at home or at the gym to help tone your arms:
1. Triceps dips
Using a chair, bench, staircase or ledge, place hands with back facing the surface and lower your body towards the ground and then back to the start position. Do three sets of 10-15 repetitions.
2. Push-ups
In prone position on the floor, hands under your shoulders with elbows close to the body, lower yourself to the floor and then back to start position. Do three sets of 10-12 repetitions.
3. Triceps kickbacks
3. Triceps kickbacks
Slightly bend in knees, push hips back, lower chest, and bend arms at the elbows. Using a dumb-bell, extend arms to the back and squeeze. Return to start position. Do three sets of 10-12 repetitions.
4. Triceps extensions
4. Triceps extensions
Sit or stand with a dumb-bell in hand holding overhead and then bend towards the back at the elbow, extend to top, then return to start position. Do three sets of 10-12 repetitions.
