Remember…Summer safety
IN a few weeks children will be on summer break and more than likely will be home, free from most constraints applied while in school.
They will revel in the freedom of being able to use technology, and for those who are not so hooked on their tablets and other screens, they will enjoy being outside without an early curfew to make preparations for school the following day.
In the midst of all the euphoria, parents must remember to be extremely cautious because over the years, data has shown that more children are reported missing in the summer months than in other months.
In fact, summer is often referred to as the ‘bumper season’ for children to go missing, mainly because children are unsupervised during this period.
So remember for this upcoming season that it is important to adequately prepare for your child being at home. You may try seeking out activities from now and enrolling them, so that when summer comes you are not scrambling for ideas.
Activities they can do include sports, summer school, summer camps, reading camps and voluntary work with non-profit organisations. Ensure that these activities take up a significant amount of time during the day and arrange for efficient transportation to get them home.
