Should I cut away from family if I feel used and abused?
Family is one of the most important institutions as it is the place where one is nurtured, loved, protected and guided. It was created to be a “safe haven”. However, with technology becoming more developed which pushes people into a go-get mentality, morals have taken a shift and so the institution of family that was once seen as safe is now a place some people are fearful of.
Is it therefore okay to stay away from your family members if you are used and abused by them? Absolutely!
A family member is firstly, human, which makes that individual capable of hurting you like any other person. As the CEO of your life, it is your prerogative to ensure you protect your life. The reality is, you have to take a stand for your life.
So:
Step 1: Limit what you share
Not because John-Tom is your cousin who you grew up with, means he means you well in your adulthood. Understand that people do change over time and sometimes they change for the worse. It is therefore important that you limit what you share with others, and sometimes it is best to shut your family out of your personal affairs.
Step 2: Set boundaries
It is not okay for your family members to bombard you with their financial crises or to dump their stresses on you. You have to set boundaries and make them known so you will be respected.
Family is extremely important as they can shape and build you into the person you ought to be but they can also tear you to pieces. Fortunately, you decide which they can do to you!
