Remember: Children have rights too
IN years gone by, many adults were of the view that children should be seen and not heard. Consequently, not many rights were afforded to anyone under 18 years.
But now that has changed, and it is important for us to remember that children have a voice and have a right to a number of things.
According to the Office of the Children’s Advocate, a child has the right to:
1. Life
2. Protection from violence
3. Protection from physical abuse
4. Protection from sexual abuse
5. Protection from neglect
6. Dignity and respect
7. Protection from child labour
8. Protection from illegal drugs.
Also bear in mind that if you know of adults who are violating these rights of children and say nothing, you can be arrested and charged.
As the summer holidays draw to an end, remember that you have a role to play in the protection of the nation’s children.
