Remember: Safe sex is good sex
THE Jamaica AIDS Support for Life recently celebrated Safer Sex Week in a bid to encourage more people to use condoms and engage in safer sex practices, especially during this time of year when sexual encounters allegedly peak.
During the course of the week the organisation also recognised Condom Day, indicating that there is still the tendency for some individuals to engage in risky sexual behaviours such as refusing to use a condom. This makes them vulnerable to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
Additionally, the Jamaica Aids Support for Life said a 2012 Knowledge and Activities Survey revealed that 46.9 per cent of people surveyed did not use a condom when engaging in sexual intercourse with their significant other, because they “loved” and “trusted” their partners.
Approximately 30,000 Jamaicans are living with HIV; however, about 15 per cent of those infected do not know that they are carrying the virus.
As such, it is important to remember that your sexual health is your responsibility, and as a result you must make serious efforts to protect yourself.
So before your next sexual encounter, remember to use a condom.
