Boxing your way to fitness
WHEN you hear the word boxing, the first thing that may come to mind is men wearing rubber gloves and jersey shorts throwing punches at each other. But boxing can also be a part of your exercise routine. Fitness Trainer at Eden Gardens, Rohan Gordon, says boxing burns calories and it strengthens your muscles.
Below he outlines some benefits of boxing
It works out your core
The nature of boxing requires participants to stay on their feet for extended periods of time. While engaging your opponent you are forced to move in various directions — sideways, forward and backwards.
It keeps your mind focused
You have no choice but to keep focused on the task at hand, since you could get punched out if you don’t.
It builds ligaments and bones
Boxing involves variations of movements, such as burpees, lunges and push-ups, which enhance your lean muscle mass.
It burns fat
One boxing session can burn over 600 calories, depending on the individual.
It improves muscle tone
Boxing is perfect if you want lean muscles. If you do boxing sessions long enough, you’ll develop toned muscles because of the repetitive fast-punching motions.
It enhances muscular endurance
Initially you will experience fatigue after the sessions. But as time goes by this feeling will go away, and you will be able to do longer sessions.
It reduces stress
If you had a long and stressful day, boxing is a good way to punch away your frustrations in a controlled environment. You will feel more relaxed after a session.
It boosts self-esteem
When you start to see changes in your physique, it is satisfying. Seeing good results will also prompt you to continue with the workout. You will feel more confident about your appearance.
