Dress for Success Jamaica career summit targets young women
THE Empower HER Career Summit for unemployed and underemployed young women will be hosted by Dress for Success Jamaica (DFSJ) at the Knutsford Court Hotel on Friday, July 20, in collaboration with the US-based non-profit Joseph and Vera Douglas Family Foundation.
Charmaine Lewis, founder and director of DFSJ, said the career summit provides the opportunity to reach out to women who need assistance to start their careers.
“Our goal is to empower and equip some 100 women with the relevant resources and skills to strengthen their efforts to achieve economic independence. Many are stuck in a state of unemployment, not knowing why they have not been able to find a job, or do not have the skills and tools they need to start a business,” Lewis explained.
“Therefore, this summit will provide them with the guidelines to get started to help to achieve their economic independence.”
Keynote speaker Dr Nsombi Jaja, well-known quality management consultant and internationally certified trainer and coach, will deliver the main motivational address.
“Our presenters have been selected to provide participants with tools for self-discovery to engender hope, discipline and aspiration,” Lewis pointed out.
“It is our hope that participants will be able to manage their work/life balance better; be aware of relevant resources to advance their careers; and possibly take the initial steps to start their own businesses.”
Lewis expressed appreciation to Rachel Barrett-Dolcine, founder of Joseph and Vera Douglas Family Foundation, who will present the session, ‘Find Your Voice, Find Your Purpose’.
“Rachel is an entrepreneur, business strategist, trainer and CEO of Compass Consulting and Training Sessions based in Maryland, USA. The Joseph and Vera Douglas Family Foundation provides entrepreneurship training for women, and health service and resources to families in underserved communities in the US and the Caribbean, and we are very fortunate to have received their support.”
Silver sponsor of the summit, JN Bank Limited, will make a presentation about ‘Managing Your Money’, to be delivered by Rose Miller, grants manager at JN Foundation and head of the JN BeWi$e financial empowerment programme.
Miller will provide practical budgeting and money management strategies.
Saniah Spencer, chief of marketing and product development, JN Bank, said the organisation is pleased to be associated with the Empower HER Career Summit.
“This event aligns well with our vision at JN Bank, which is to empower Jamaicans to achieve their financial goals and to contribute to the economic success of the nation. JN Bank, therefore, supports the efforts of DFSJ in its quest to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing proper attire, confidence, and career development so that they can thrive not only in their professional lives, but also in their communities and wider society,” she noted.
