Hell hath no fury, like a woman scorned
‘HEAVEN has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury, like a woman scorned’. The line from William Congreve’s 1697 poem The Mourning Bride explains the wrath that overtakes some women when they have been wronged, and for some of the men we spoke to below, the moment they realised the truth to the statement was a lesson well learnt.

I made the mistake of hitting her. She didn’t fight back physically. I love dumplings and while eating one day I realised the dumplings were spicy, only to realise she had kneaded them into purple peppers. She had sat calmly and watched me eat.
Robert F:
I dated this fellow student once who had loaned me her sheet set as I had thrown up on the one I had while I had the flu and was too weak to do my laundry. I was living on hall at The UWI at the time. After I got better I needed comfort and I told her I was going to sleep with someone else, since she didn’t want to take our relationship to a sexual level. She abruptly ended the conversation over the phone. I was with the other girl when I heard a pounding on my door. The girl opened the door, my ex walked in, said, “Goodnight, nice to meet you”, walked past her, removed her sheet from my bed, took off the pillowcase, and walked away. When she reached the door she turned to my new girlfriend and said, “The laundry basket is in the corner.”

My female friend allowed me to borrow her car and I blew the engine and left it on the road. The police towed it and because I refused to let her know where exactly I had left her car, she slashed my tyres. Another time that same friend and I were abroad and someone parked too close to her and she couldn’t leave. She took a shoe from her back seat and hit out their tail light.

I learnt from the experience of an associate. I was living on campus and there was this guy from another block on our hall of residence who would always try to proposition girls and get rude if they didn’t answer. He had a girlfriend and she practically moved into the hall and would cook, wash, clean and do everything for him. I hardly saw her going to classes so she was well invested and she seemed to be well off as well. Well one night us guys were hanging out at the front of the hall and saw when she arrived. Before we knew it, a loud quarrel started as she had found out that he was cheating. Of course we went to look. To cut a long story short, she cut up everything she caught, took back her stuff, and even went after him with a knife. Not long after, he returned to being humble, so we figured he was back to being broke.

My ex caught me harmlessly texting another girl so she put laxatives in my lunch and hid the tissue.

I know of a situation that happened with my neighbour in rural Jamaica. She was about 19 and I remember when her boyfriend at the time broke up with her and told her he had cheated and that she deserved better. She was very upset because he didn’t do it in person. So she told him not to come back to her ‘hill bottom’ (part of the district). But the youth came back that same evening and the girl and her brother saw him, and ran and gathered some big stones. By the time he got close enough he was being pelted with them, and as boys we just joined in. Much to our amusement the guy took the slope leading off the hill with his feet in his hands.

My daughter’s mother and I had an argument before our daughter was born. During the argument she never retaliated. When I was sleeping I felt someone straddle me so I was there thinking, what a great way to make up. I opened my eyes and saw a butcher knife in her hand. Then she placed it at my neck and told me to never let it happen again. To this day I try not to upset her and when she is not talking to me, I worry.
