By design: Dr Nastassia Tate’s five years of healing women, wholly
SHE nearly quit. Midway through her obstetrics and gynaecology internship, grief-stricken after losing her father, Dr Nastassia Tate called her consultant and said she was done. She wasn’t coming back. But something shifted. “The loss of my dad made the bringing of life to the world even more special,” she reflects. “Life-affirming, and truly in awe of the intricacies of how God works.”
She went back. And five years ago, on April 21, 2021, she built something that would change the healthcare experience for countless Jamaican women and children.
Integrated Health by Design, the private practice Dr Tate founded and leads as medical director, celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. What began as a vision during uncertain pandemic times has grown into a thriving, purpose-driven space where women are seen, heard, and cared for across every stage of life.
The name is intentional. “Integrated Health by Design means exactly what it sounds like,” Dr Tate explained. “The management of patients is holistic, looking at the whole woman from head to toe, based on an egalitarian relationship between doctor and patient.”
It is a conversation about options, about lifestyle, about what truly works for each individual. “That approach was deliberately curated. Because it was lacking in healthcare as we practised it before. Patients felt rushed and unheard. I felt rushed and unheard as a patient, and I knew we deserved better.”
That philosophy extends to the team she built. Women treating women was not incidental. It was, as she says, by design.
“Women often understand the experiences, emotions, and nuances of womanhood in a deeply personal way. From adolescence and fertility journeys to pregnancy, motherhood, loss, and overall wellness, there is a level of empathy and connection that comes from shared lived experiences,” she said.

The practice also operates under one deliberate roof, with women and their children cared for together, removing one more burden from already demanding lives. Young girls who grow up within the practice are introduced early to positive health-seeking behaviours and transition naturally into gynaecological care when the time comes. That seamless continuum builds something medicine sometimes forgets to prioritise: trust.
Balancing clinical precision with emotional presence is not always easy, but Dr Tate has made it her standard. “Very often, the real answers behind symptoms are found beyond the physical. You have to understand the person as a whole — their stressors, relationships, fears, and emotional state,” she said.
Sometimes what a patient needs is a hug, a prayer, or simply being asked how they are really doing. “Those moments allow patients to feel seen as human beings rather than just another number on a schedule,” she said.
One visit last year captures this perfectly. A patient she had initially seen for post-menopausal bleeding, later confirmed as cancer, returned months after treatment simply to give her doctor a hug. “She told me she loved me, and I told her I loved her too and genuinely meant it,” Dr Tate recalled. “Eight months in, I knew so much about her and her family. She felt like my grandma. And if it were my grandma, that is exactly how I would want her to be treated.”
Then there are the deliveries. “The joy of bringing new babies to life never gets old,” she said, voice brightening. The most precious ones, she added, are the rainbow babies, the long-awaited firsts, the moments a patient says, ‘I’m happy I chose you this time around’.”
As she looks ahead, Dr Tate is focused on expanding maternal care from preconception through an enriched post-partum experience, and creating more individualised pathways for women navigating sexual dysfunction, menopause, and infertility without shame or silence.
Her message to Jamaican women is clear. “It is okay to ask questions, to seek a second opinion, to have someone advocate for you. The more you believe that, the more you will find the doctor who makes you feel seen and heard.”And five years in, Dr Nastassia Tate is still that doctor.
