Co-parenting after a break-up
After a break-up or divorce you may feel emotionally free and ready to move on with your life. However, if there are children involved, you have to think from the angle that you still have to co-parent with your ex which can pose a real challenge if not handled correctly.
So:
Discuss financial responsibilities
It is important for a budget to be drafted and discussed as to who will cover the expenses of childcare and so forth. Do not assume that your ex should know, but rather have a serious discussion on it to alleviate arguments.
Try to have a respectful co-parenting relationship
It is not for you to become friends, but rather to have a relationship where you can both communicate with respect on matters of the children.
Do not punish your children
Some men have a tendency to avoid spending on their children because the mother has moved on or they feel the need for revenge. But your children should never suffer for a relationship fail. You were not in an intimate relationship with your children but rather the mother so even if the mother cuts communication, you are still obligated to care for your children.
Avoiding poisoning the mind of your child against the other parent
Just because you may have some strong, negative feelings towards your ex, it doesn’t give you the right to pass that energy to your child, loading unto them your emotional pain and burden. Some women are guilty of this and that is not acceptable. Allow your children to freely love both their parents.
