This week in Island Child Style news, AW Fashion lowers the curtains on our coverage of profiles from this year’s cohort of designers, slated to unveil new kiddie collections in T-12 days. Island Child Style takes place on November 24 at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston.
APPAMAN

Norwegian native Harald Husum is the founder and designer of Appaman. His inspiration for the brand is the whimsical spirit of his childhood that celebrated the unbreakable bond between a boy and his pet ape. This is coupled with the mean streets of Brooklyn, New York, where he now resides. Appaman is a collection of iconic ‘cool’ clothes for kids with an ever-changing palette for vibrant garments. Give your kid some street cred with Appaman.

What excites you about Island Child Style?
What excites me about Island Style is the level of professionalism of the show’s production and the kids. I have often said that I think they can compete with the adult models any day. They rock!
How long have you been designing for the next generation?
I have been designing for the future generation since 1997. We initially did more touristy souvenir styles and have recently evolved to be more inclusive of all sectors.
How would you describe your collection?
Actually, I would say that this collection epitomises Island Style.
What makes your collection appealing to the next generation?
I think the appeal for the next generation is the fact that the collection has comfortable, easy, and colourful styles that are very similar to our adult collections, and they are wearable.

Shenna Carby is a Jamaican womenswear designer. Her beautiful designs ruled the catwalk as she became the winner of the first staging of Mission Catwalk in 2011. She is a vivacious, creative and eccentric designer. Carby’s environment influenced her fashion through the bold, unusual and stylish nature of its people. She pursued fashion design at Garmex HEART Academy, and has been designing for the past 10 years. This will be her first children’s collection.
