Out with the old…

LEAVING things behind in an old year is a way to create space for personal growth and new opportunities in the coming year. By reflecting on past experiences, both positive and negative, we can identify patterns, mistakes, and lessons learned. Letting go of old habits, grudges, or regrets helps free the mind and spirit, allowing us to move forward with a sense of renewal. This process fosters emotional resilience, as it encourages a mindset of acceptance and change rather than dwelling on what cannot be changed.

The act of leaving things behind symbolises a fresh start, a common practice that offers a psychological reset. It allows us to declutter our emotional and mental states, which in turn can lead to increased focus and clarity for new goals.

What are you leaving behind this year?

Kim, 27:

I’m leaving behind stubbornness, and my belief that I can fix everything and everyone. I’m embracing the fact that therapy is good, separating is good, reconnecting is good, being alone can be good, and that at the end of the day, the only one that has really got you, is you yourself.

Zuri, 26:

Leaving behind bad treatment and disrespect from men who weren’t raised right. My partner seems like he does not have the emotional intelligence to be in a position where I’m not being disrespected or being honoured. If he continues that stance, he will be gone before you can say happy new year.

Laila, 23:

I’m leaving toxic relationships and poor dating habits behind. I don’t need a man or a man’s stress, so if you’re not coming good, it’s a no for me.

Imani, 34:

I’m quitting my job, and I don’t have anything lined up, I’m just taking a leap of faith. I’m very unhappy at this current place and people are toxic, plus this month they’ll be expecting me to take on a new role, and I’m not comfortable with that. So for the beginning of January, I’m starting all over again.

Alaina, 36:

Leaving my husband and starting over with just me and my daughter. My life is not as bad as some of the others I’ve seen and heard about, but I think it’s important that we as women know that we come first, and I’m choosing me.
