Rugby Sevens team place 13th at Commonwealth Games
BIRMINGHAM, UK— Jamaica’s Rugby Sevens team snapped a four game losing run to secure 13th place in the Commonwealth Games on Sunday, beating Sri Lanka by two points – 26-24 – at Coventry Stadium in Birmingham.
Jamaica had scored just seven points in one of their four previous games, all losses, before beating Malaysia 28-7 in a play-off and then topping the Sri Lankans on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Chris Binnie’s run in the men’s squash singles ended at the round of 16 after he was beaten 3-0 by England’s Adrian Waller.
Julian Morrison advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s plate event after beating Ghana’s Evans Ayih 3-0 in the round of 16.
The Jamaican swimmers are still seeking to get to a finals but came up short again on Sunday. Nathaniel Thomas was fourth in his 50m backstroke first round heat in 27.60 seconds and fifth in his 100m freestyle in 52.64 seconds, finishing ahead of teammate Sidrell Williams who was eighth in 53.54 seconds.
Keanan Dols just missed advancing to the semis in the men’s 200m butterfly finishing fourth in 2:01.75 seconds while Zaneta Alvaranga was the only swimmer in her women’s 50m butterfly heat not to advance after she swam 27.89 seconds.
Mackenzie Headley swam 28.12 seconds in her heat and failed to advance.
In cycling, Daniel Palmer finished 24th out of 26 riders in the men’s track sprint and Malik Reid was 25th while Zoe Boyd did not start.
