The Jamaican flag is said to be one of the reasons behind the chaos that erupted at the funeral of eight-year-old Danielle Rowe on Sunday.

According to a police source, the Jamaican flag was stuck with a knife and contained red paint, suggestive of blood splatter.

It is said that the flag drew the ire of some of the officiating ministers with a chaplain having tapped a senior police officer, asking him to intervene in the proceedings.

“I was not aware of what was going on. The police brought it to my attention that the chaplain wanted to talk to me about what was happening,” said a police source.

“He expressed some concern that they had desecrated the Jamaican flag and it is not something they wanted to be a part of the funeral,” the source added.

According to the source, the funeral home indicated that they did not place the flag on the casket.

The Government in a statement on Sunday distanced itself from the service stating that although Education Minister, Fayval Williams gave a statement at the service, no other person from the government was engaged in the funeral.

Rowe’s brutal murder in June sparked national outrage.

She was abducted from the Braeton Primary and Infant School in Portmore, St Catherine on Thursday, June 8 and taken to Roosevelt Avenue, St Andrew, in the vicinity of the National Stadium, where her throat was slashed. She was found bloodied along the roadway by a soldier who took her to the nearby Bustamante Hospital for Children where she died in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 10.
