WHILE in her cell on March 13, 2026, an inmate at South Camp Adult Correctional Centre said she felt a powerful conviction from the Holy Spirit prompting her to cry out to the Lord in prayer and dedicate her life to God.

She told the Jamaica Observer that, as a standard, she prays nightly, asking God to protect her family outside the walls of prison, but after attending a crusade at the institution earlier that day, her spirit was moved and she knew there was no turning back. The following day, she joined 16 other inmates, who had also decided to walk with Christ, and was baptised. Now, she is imploring others to take the same step.

For the inmate, her conviction is an experience she said she will never forget.

“Goosebumps started to take me, I just wanted to shout out, ‘Jesus! Jesus!’ It’s a different feeling. I never knew Christ this close until I got baptised. I would go to a lot of round robins. I would drive up and down with other persons; I’m not saying I didn’t see God work miracles while I was in sin, but I didn’t know Christ this close until I was baptised. The transformation was awesome,” said the inmate whose identity will not be disclosed.

“I decided that family fails me, friends fail me, but every time I turn to Christ he is always there, so I said, ‘Okay, Father, I tell you two times that I am going to give my life to you. I am going to make the decision now.’ I remember that night I was in the dormitory, and I started praying. I was just constantly praying, and I kept saying, ‘Why am I crying, and I am not a crybaby?’ I got up on Saturday morning, and I said, ‘I’m going to give my life to Christ,’ ” she recounted.

The 26-year-old admitted that while she considers herself a decent human being, she got caught up with the wrong people and made mistakes that have altered the course of her life forever. One of those mistakes was an act of fraudulent conversion, for which she was arrested and charged in April 2025. She has three years left on her sentence.

Fraudulent conversion is a criminal offence involving the dishonest misappropriation, use, or disposal of another person’s property or money by someone who was entrusted with it. It occurs when a person, having lawful possession of an asset, converts it to their own use or a third party’s use, typically defined under larceny laws.

Fraudulent conversion in Jamaica is a serious offence under Section 24(1) of the Larceny Act, which can result in imprisonment with hard labour for up to seven years.

She admitted that her actions were wrong and shared that she’d carried the burden of her decision, but now that burden has been laid to rest.

“You are never too old to learn, everybody makes mistakes, even the warders and wardresses, they could be here as well because it takes nothing to be in here, but I’ve decided to walk this road and I will walk it with everything in me,” declared the inmate.

She said her decision to turn her life around has provided her with a strong support system, including fellow inmates who’ve been baptised, as well as wardens and chaplains who often come together to host Bible studies and offer a listening ear during difficult moments. She said inmates also host weekly church meetings with local pastors and religious groups, turning the walls of the prison into an environment of worship andpraise.

“When the churches come, it’s worship. It’s not anything to play about, just straight worship. People get rehabilitated in church. Church is where most of the girls, we go and cry out; church is where most of the girls find God and know God, both sinners and Christians. It’s an awesome feeling,” she told the Sunday Observer.

“We pray for each other, we do our fasting whenever we can, and the girls support each other. The persons who are in lock-up are not bad people. There are people in here with talent, and they just need a second chance,” she said.

The inmate, mom to a six-year-old, shared that her daughter, though young, understands the decision her mother made and is in full support of her transformation — a source of motivation that pushes her to walk the narrow road, even when things get tough.

“She will say, ‘Mommy, hold the faith.’ If she can tell me hold the faith and let God, who am I to doubt?” she questioned. “I just say, ‘Father God, I ask you to show me the way so I might walk.’ It is already done,” she declared.

The 26-year-old appealed for others to accept Christ, stressing that no one is too far past the point of redemption.

“Everybody can be saved if you accept Christ and know God. There are people who do a lot of stuff, and they are now pastors, and they are big in the church because God forgave them. Everybody can be saved. All you have to do is accept Christ and let Him do the rest,” she said.
