CAC awaits details after Grace Baked Beans recall
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Following last week’s recall of batches of Grace Baked Beans, the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) on Monday said it is awaiting the details related to the “swelling” of cans as well as the determinant which GraceKennedy used to conclude the risk levels to consumers if consumed.Related story: Grace recalls batches of baked beans
The National Agricultural Health and Food Safety Coordinating Committee, of which the CAC is a member, is mandated to manage food safety issues and will be doing its checks in collaboration with Grace Kennedy on the voluntary recall.
In the meantime, the CAC is appealing to families to check the labels and the batch numbers to ensure that none of the affected cans are fed to their children.
“Grace Baked Beans is a common staple among children and in some institutions,” the CAC said. “Consumers must return these batch numbers to the point of purchase for a full refund while the responsible regulatory food safety agencies carry out their investigations.”
GraceKennedy Limited last Wednesday recalled nine batches of its Grace Baked Beans produced at its Grace Food Processors Canning Division.
Andrew Ho, senior general manager, Manufacturing said then: “Through routine internal checks the company identified irregularities with the product, manifested in the swelling of some cans. We have therefore decided to recall the specific batches mentioned to protect our consumers and are also taking all necessary steps to address the irregularities.”
He had also explained that there is a remote probability that the batches identified may cause adverse health consequences.
